Ghosting, bread-crumbing, hot and cold extremes, the slow-fade… you know about these already. Now ask yourself, who exactly are you afraid to hurt more — them , or yourself? Be honest now, because having to accept any ounce of shame, remorse, or insult to injury from another knowing you are, in fact, the source of their pain is absolutely dreadful — painful to ourselves, even.
Guess what? If you know you are a good person, your integrity will never compromise that. Harder than it seems, though on the surface this appears as common sense.
But what do I mean by self-preservation, exactly? Respect that someone deserves the same as you do. Respect that they are allowed to be angry, upset, sad, confused, or withdrawn even if none of which is what you intended.
I mean, seriously, would you really want someone to break it off with you over a quick, random text? Or DM out of the blue?

Doing the breaking up is hard, and being broken up with is also hard… as is. Allow them the space to be angry, upset, confused, and in denial without matching their energy.
You have the ability to acknowledge and even empathize their experience while staying grounded in your own. Being up front about cheating on them is supposed to make breaking it off easier. Easier for who — you, or them? You, maybe. Their feelings are not yours to dictate. And if you go in to letting them down or breaking it off with that mentality, you risk igniting a dumpster fire… with you both trapped inside, together. So when I say to stop trying to control their reaction or feelings , I am also telling you to stop trying to avoid or running away from yours the shame, guilt, insecurity, etc.
